Though they may be missed by tropical cyclones that impact the shores of continental countries, the proportional impact upon islands and island states of tropical cyclones, for example, is much greater – to the extent of almost all dwellings demolished or all crops lost (Lewis 1979). Additionally, some archipelagos contain active volcanoes and are seismically active and numerous islands have been fought over and colonised, often more than once – a superimposed vulnerability in itself and one which introduced others that are prevalent today.
